Some Sort of Fruit

I was shopping today and saw these. I am not sure what they are nor do I know how to eat them. Any ideas?

Okay this is an edit to my original post. It is called a Persimmon. I still don't know how to eat it! What caught my eye was how the leaves formed a square shape, and the color is amazing.

Yet another addition to this post I tasted it and it is very good. Hard to explain, just pick on up and try it!

Hi Deltra,
Found you through Carol Marine in Austin. This looks like a persimmon. I think you peel it then eat it like an apple. It should be slightly soft. I find they have an unusual taste.

Yep, it's a persimmon. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persimmon. This one is the fuyu, you can peel and eat it as is or let it ripen and cut it in half and scoop it out. The hachiya type you have to let ripe to the point of squishy softness.

But all that aside, I'm enjoying your blog! Nice brushwork, good colors!

Greetings, Deltra. I found you through a comment on Ed Gordon's site and am delighted to see your work. I esp. like this one, as it is my favorite fruit and I love the way you've captured the lusciousness of this wonderful gift from God.

You can just take off the leaves, give it a rinse and slice it up, or just bite into it like an apple. It's a very subtle flavor, reminiscent of dates. BTW, persimmon means "fruit of the gods" in Greek.

Where are you in Canada? I'm in north Idaho... just wondering if you're anywhere near Creston, BC, just over the border from us.
