Yukon Experience, Retrospective

Hello Subscribers!

Summer 2018, seems like so long ago, yet the memories of this place stick. Canada's Yukon Territory, what an amazing place, and over the next few weeks I will be posting memories, thoughts, and reflective writing about my trip, my artwork, and the connections I made with land, others, and myself. It was certainly the highlight of the summer and an experience that has impacted not only my artwork but also my lifestyle. I will share how in future posts so stay tuned!  Thanks for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Deltra

On going series of work regarding finding a sense of place

Resection is a method for determining an unknown position (position finding) measuring angles with respect to known positions. This definition informed my use of triangular shapes in order to provide a structural framework that speak to how we form environments and how environments form us. In these studies these geometric shapes take on a transparency that allows for marks and colour to exist beyond their framework. The way light bends, is diffused, is blocked and reflected when interrupted by objects interests me as these moments seem to suspend time, creating surreal like atmospheres that seemingly carry messages from other worldly spaces and realities.

Freedom to Experiment While Studying Ice Formations

This patch of ice was formed by dripping water from the roof of our house. Spring is slowly starting to arrive here and the air and earth is still very could. The sculptural forms of the built up water droplets caught my eye and stuck with me for quiet a few days after taking these photos. I decided to use these forms as a way of considering patten and mark making in a series of monotype prints. I am experimenting with different kinds of paper and collage as well to achieve tactility.

Show Announcement, HerWork2018

I have the privilege of partnering with my eight year old son Corwyn on collaborative work for exhibition at the Multicultural Centre Public Art Gallery in Stony Plain. HerWork2018 is a group exhibition celebrating women artists from the greater Edmonton area, coinciding with International Women’s Day. The theme of the show this year is "Partnership" and Corwyn and I would love for you to join us at the opening reception on March 8 from 6 to 8 pm to celebrate the work we have done together. The exhibition runs for the month of March.

Late night in the print studio

There was a great buzz in the SNAP studio with all the lithographers doing there thing during Marc Siegner's class last night. I stayed late and worked on a few new viscosity print plates. Thanks Don Colpitts for hanging out and taking this photo of my copper plate. It was great fun to see how the prints turned out, I think I am beginning to understand how this works. Always different, always unpredictable. Then late at night when the studio was quite, I painted and pulled a couple more monotypes. Working this way is so satisfying.

Shifts and New Routines

For the last few weeks I have been thinking about environments and the attachments I have to places, the importance land has in my life and how I identify with certain places and spaces.  The practice of  working out imagery, colour palette, marks, and textures is something that is becoming an regular part of my creative routine. I am moving from a representational approach of documenting spaces, places and objects to a more abstracted interpretation in order to capture an essence of a space rather than a recognizable reminder, or accurate picture. The images pictured here is some field work I did few weeks back when I went snowshoeing out and about in my neighbourhood. Winter is long and I am learning to embrace it's beauty.
